Lightning Bolt, a fucking fabulous band! When we saw them play they were the second opening act in a most fantastic line-up. They did not wait for the first band to even finish their set before setting up their drums and speakers in the middle of the venue floor, in the midst of the crowd and fans. They began playing before the opening band had even finished the set they were in the middle of violating us all with. Damn was that first band terrible, but had they not played Lightning Bolt would not have been able to begun playing in the middle of their closing song which was a glorious show of just how loud, heavy and fierce their sound really is. No recording can compare to their live shows. The bass ran through the entire crowd and as they ran each song into the next never taking a break like we will the sentences in this description playing nonstop for a 40 or 50 minute set the crowd melted into one, everyone's organs turning into a gelatinous mush leaving us all bleeding from the ears before the entire concert was even half over. There are not words to explain what it is like to see this band live, it is simply a must. It is a shame that their sound, being primarily bass, can not be reproduced in any of their recorded albums. Their vinyl pressings do the music a little more justice but traditional speakers and home stereos just can not put out the sound they do by any means. Seeing them live almost ruins their recorded music, it is simply that much better. the Lightning Bolt discography We read a review about them in the Seattle's very own Stranger a few years back detailing a show they performed somewhere in the city we believe it was, we can not recall the exact venue, but the show had sold out. If we knew they were playing we would have been there and we regret to this day not hearing about this show. The crowd of people who came to see them play was so much greater than the number of available tickets available people began to break into the venue and it got so overcrowded that Lightning Bolt apparently took their portable set and moved out of the venue into the street outside, where they set up and played their entire set publicly. We will never forgive ourselves for missing that show, ever. |
